Books
Please allow me to suggest you some books to read and to link you some authors I like. The ones I care the most. The ones that need a clear understanding. The ones I read most and I feel like sharing with you.
Let me briefly introduce the arguments they are related to. After the brief intro, I list all the blog post where, one batch at the time, I write about the books and documentaries or movies in a suggested reading/watching order.
Hackers:
So many things are told about Hackers, most of the people out there doesn’t even know who/what Hackers really are. There are a few definitions and classifications of Hackers out there, never mind the media’s and “I wanna get rich and famous telling some stories about how I caught Kevin” bollocks and some stupid movies of course…
Most of the time Hackers are pictured as villains of out times: “hackers are the ones who can eat your hamster via the Internet”. Or, why not?, someone gets called an hacker just because he’s a little good at computing or Ceiling Cat knows what.
I do not pretend to teach you who Hackers really are or what the Hacker term really means and when/how to use it. Who can you call or define an Hacker? There’s a big controversy already about that.
Of course, that controversy exist for a reason. All the term are correct and you should understand them. The diversification were made so one could put the different activities under different umbrellas.
Anyway, I firmly believe that you should read some books that will give you a wider idea of the term and the people. At least of the Hackers I want you to know about. What they have done and still do for this society, what we all can do in the Information Era. For all the rest there’s Wikipedia.
One last note about Hackers is that, in my personal view, anyone with an attitude, in any field, could be called an Hacker. In fact I think that Leonardo Da Vinci was a great Hacker and I’m preparing a work on that.
Sociology
Sociology and all the other topics are bound together more than you think. Even if I’m no sociologist and I don’t even have an high school diploma, I’m a good thinker and a good observer. Also, like all of the people who care, I like to think that we can improve our society, in any case. I’m also pretty ideological and I believe in utopias, like the ones I might rant on my blog. Like the ones I want you to read about. I might sound like a zealot at times, but these are my ideas and this is my blog.
Sci-Fi
It is my belief that for some reason or another, Sci-Fi books (fantasy and dystopic topics in general) predicted the future. I don’t think that the authors are clairvoyants, they just have a good understanding of our society and a great vision, but definitely they can’t predict the future. Just suggest it.
Unfortunately, those suggestions, what does seem to become true about that, is always the worse side of the stories.
My personal and not difficult to share conclusion is: if that happens it’s because who has to understand the bad side of those stories always does, and almost always has the power to make that happen. While who have to realize what those stories really are written for, never does. Or if they do, they always are too few compared to the mass. There are too many factors to take in consideration for this conclusion, but that’s the main point of it.
Technology
I also would like to share some good technical books with you. Because Hacker, Sociology and Sci-Fi without a Technology section would be just missing something. Don’t feel obliged to read technical books if you don’t have to, this is more a list for professionals. If you do care to read them, you certainly will get some extras. Feel free to do as you please.
Creative Commons
Hackers, Sociology, Sci-fi and Technology all bound together by one argument: Creative Commons.
Since the most widely known and used Creative Commons artifacts are Arts, since I’m an Artist and since I am a big fan, I’ll include good resources for Creative Commons too. You might ask: What do they have to do with this? Why do I bind them together under these arguments?
The answer it’s not simple, but Creative Commons (which from now on you should think as a whole) it is happening and it’s changing the world.
Finally, The List:
Hopefully, I’ll be blogging often on the subjects and the books and I’ll expand the list. Since the arguments are really bound together, I will not make a distinction between them. Think of this collection of books as my personal “Summa Technologica”.
Enjoy:
